(TOKYO) – Amanojaku, one of the world’s most respected taiko ensembles, has been appointed by the Nippon Taiko Foundation to direct a performance by one thousand taiko drummers at Skol Arena Anhembi, Sao Paulo’s finest samba venue on June 21. Amanojaku will also hold a concert in the city. The performances celebrating the 100th anniversary of Japanese immigration to Brazil are the culmination of a bold and innovative five-year program.

The drummers, primarily Japanese-Brazilians in their teens and 20s, will perform “Kizuna (Bond)” co-composed by Amanojaku leader Yoichi Watanabe at the 500-meter samba venue.

“Playing taiko requires more than just technique,” says Mr. Watanabe, who is making his sixth trip to Brazil to help young Japanese-Brazilian men and women discover their roots, learn the value of hard work, perseverance and teamwork through the traditional Japanese art form. Taiko has spread rapidly through the nation known for its love of percussion, and is now played by more than 60 groups.

The event is a moving testament to the success story of Japanese-Brazilians, who have risen through hard work, to become an integral part of a dynamic and booming country.

2008年4月26日に馬場誠・ひろみの結婚式が福島県で行われました。

誠さんと知り合ったのはもう10年前に彼が大学のため、福島から上京してきた時でした。

彼とはそんな頃から一緒に大太鼓コンテストに出たり、セミプロとしてライブをやったり、共に和太鼓奏者として成長してきた仲です。

「和太鼓のプロ奏者」と言う自分と同じ夢を追ってきた彼が結婚するのはやはり特別な意味を持ちます。

もちろん嬉しかったけど、寂しかったのも事実です。

「寂しさ」と言うのは・・・うまく説明できないのですが、高校を卒業したとき、嬉しかったと同時に寂しかったのと重なる部分があります。

人生の大きな節目を向かえ、大きく成長するために脱皮した後はもう抜け殻の中に戻ることはできません。

高校を卒業し、卒業した安堵や自分の選んだ道を歩み始める喜びと同時に「もう子供ではない」と言う自覚から来る不安に襲われました。

自分より一足早く一家の柱へと脱皮した誠さんを見て、「また成長したんだな」と思いました。

式の最中に目が合ったのですが「頑張ってね」と言う自分に対して「お前もな」と言われている気がしました。

先日、国際交流基金の講演会で来日していたホセ･アントニオ･アブレウ博士が稽古の見学にいらっしゃいました。　代表曲の「武人」や「五色の太鼓」を演奏し、「太鼓を打ってみますか？」とバチを差し出すとアブレウ氏は「プロの人たちがいる前でそんな事はできない」と笑顔で答えました。

音楽は楽しいものですし、華やかでもありますが、その裏には何年もの地味な稽古や下積みがあるものです。　それをよく理解しているアブレウ博士だからこそ簡単に太鼓を触る事をしなかったのではないかと思います。

アブレウ博士は犯罪や貧困などの影から子供たちを守るために恵まれない子供たちに音楽を指導し、善良な市民に育てるための活動を続けてきました。

ベネズエラ青少年･児童オーケストラ全国制度財団

ベネズエラの貧困地域の子供たちをクラシック音楽の練習、演奏を通じて教育する財団で、元文化大臣のホセ･アントニオ･アブレウ博士（67歳）が1975年、カラカスのガレージで11人の子供に音楽演奏を指導したことからスタートした。現在は国と民間からの財政支援の下に、25万人の児童･青少年が参加し、計210のオーケストラを擁する全国組織に発展している。　財団は、2歳半以上の子供を公募、無償で楽器を与え、年齢や習得段階に応じて毎日訓練する。14歳以上の優秀な子供には、カラカスの「ベネズエラ全国青少年管弦楽団」のメンバーとなる道を用意し、住居から生活費まで提供する。

ベネズエラは世界有数の石油産出国だが、貧民層が国民の50％を占め、南米一の犯罪多発国でもあり、殺人事件はカラカス首都圏だけで毎週末150件も発生する。こうした環境の中で、アブレウ博士は「子供たちを犯罪と貧困から救い、善良な市民に育てるためには、オーケストラのクラシック音楽が良の手段。音楽で子供の情緒、感受性、協調性、人格が形成され、社会の発展につながる」との信念から、全国的規模で普及活動を進めてきた。

実際、犯罪を重ねて少年院に収容された少年が財団に加わり、クラリネットを通じて更生し、現在はクラリネット教師として財団の子供たちに教えている例もある。また、ベルリン・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団のコントラバス奏者となった貧民街出身の卒業生もいる。

この活動に賛同したクラウディオ･アバド、サイモン･ラトル、マルタ･アルゲリッチ、ムスティスラフ･ロストロポーヴィチ、ら著名な音楽家が、カラカスに出向いてオーケストラを指導したり、共演したりしている。　同様の試みは他の中南米諸国にも広がり、アブレウ博士の提唱で、来年には「カリブ･ラテンアメリカ青少年交響楽団」が結成される。2008年10月には「ベネズエラ全国青少年管弦楽団」が日本でアルゲリッチと共演する計画も進んでいる。奨励金は楽器購入などに充てる予定。
