Traditional Music for the Modern Era

(TOKYO) – “Soul Beat,” the just released DVD from Amanojaku is an opportunity for international audiences and newcomers to “taiko” music to discover the ground-breaking sound of one of Japan’s top taiko ensembles.

The DVD, Amanojaku’s first, delivers an energetic live performance by the seven-member band of original compositions by Yoichi Watanabe, who has toured more than 40 nations and taught hundreds of people not only in Japan but also in the U.S. and Brazil.

Amanojaku pieces are innovative musical statements that combine traditional technique with modern rhythms, and seek to challenge other great forms of world music as modern Tokyo music.

The snapping snare-drum-like shime evokes the seasons like Kabuki. The soulful pulsating beat of the giant odaiko demands fierce muscular control. And the collage of rhythms slips in and out of kagura shrine beats to Latin percussion.

Amanojkau pieces are played in a unique and demanding physical style that some critics have compared to dance choreography. The 94-minute DVD of Amanojaku’s 20th Anniversary Concert features premieres of “Kaiun” and “Goshiki no Taiko” as well as trademark pieces such as “Bujin.”

Thank you for joining us in celebrating the 20th anniversary of our taiko ensemble Amanojaku. Twenty years make up practically a generation, and today gives me an opportunity to look back on those years. We see life as a never-ending path as we strive to perfect our music and claim our place in the legacy of taiko as an art form.

Today, we are proud to present three new compositions:

 “Toshin Susano-o” is a rearrangement of a 1994 composition, which explores the limitless possibilities and diverse voices of the taiko drum.

 On “Goshiki no Taiko” each player showcases his or her individuality on the odaiko, forming a breathtaking vortex of sound with each beat.

 “Kaiun ~Inori・Negai~” expresses respect to our ancestors, and a deep gratitude for the blessed life that we have inherited. Through this music, we hope to instill the fading Japanese spirit in the hearts of the next generation.

We hope you enjoy today’s performance, and thank you always for supporting the music.

Yoichi Watanabe
Amanojaku Founder and Leader
